A preliminary report by the Nepali government has put the number of displaced persons in the decade-long conflict in the country at 25,000.
According to Monday's The Kathmandu Post, a high-level committee, formed under the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, has concluded that the number of displaced people is highest in Kailali, Bardia and Surkhet districts in western Nepal.
"The committee has prepared the statistics on the basis of reports received from District Administration Offices across the country," Srikanta Regmi, coordinator of the committee, told the daily.
"We have completed verifying names from 17 districts and hope to complete the process in the next one month," said Shantikrishna Adhikari, a member of the committee, on Sunday.
The committee has received reports on displaced victims from 73out of 75 districts. With more people registering as conflict victims lately, Adhikari said the total number of displaced victims could go up to 29,000.
According to the daily, the government has already started providing financial assistance to the displaced victims on the basis of the report.
In its decision on Oct. 10, the government decided to provide transportation fare to all the displaced persons who want to return home.
