An intelligence report obtained by the Philippine authority shows that opposition forces were planning to woo a prominent Cabinet minister to stop supporting Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The opposition figures "allegedly hoped that the resignation of one prominent official would convince many if not all Cabinet members to bolt the administration," the local television network ABS-CBN News said Monday.
Arroyo survived a major Cabinet crisis in July 2005 when half a dozen of her ministers resigned to call for her resignation.
The report, however, did not identify the Cabinet member involved. It said the revolt attempts are expected to remain on high tide until mid-2008 to push the image of corrupted Arroyo administration into people's minds.
Arroyo's enemies, according to the report, also plan more protest in 2008 eyeing major civil disobedience.
Arroyo has been battling ouster attempts, including efforts to impeach her in Congress since she assumed office in 2001. Military support, a stable economy as well as weakening opposition ensure her stay in power.
