Two soldiers were killed and three injured in a Claymore mine explosion in Sri Lanka's north central district of Anuradhapura Thursday morning, defense officials said.
Officials said Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels detonated the Claymore mine targeting a military vehicle at around9:30 a.m. (0400 GMT) along the Yakawewa-Padaviya main road.
The three injured soldiers have been admitted to the general hospital at Kebithigollewa, security sources said.
Clashes between government troops and the LTTE have been escalating since the end of 2005, with more than 5,000 people being killed and rendering the Norwegian-brokered ceasefire agreement exist only on paper.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east. Source:Xinhua
