Myanmar top leader Senior-General Than Shwe called on the country's people Friday to cooperate with the government in realizing the state's seven-step roadmap with union, patriotic and sacrificial spirit.

Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, made the call in his message on the occasion of Myanmar's 60th anniversary Independence Day.

Noting that a seven-step roadmap is being realized phase by phase, Than Shwe stressed that the process of national convention, concluded on Sept. 3 last year, represents the first and most important step by adopting fundamental principles and detailed basic principles to write a new constitution.

As a follow-up, the constitution is being drafted by a commission assigned for the purpose, he said.

According to the government's roadmap announced in August 2003,the new constitution draft is to be endorsed through a national referendum. Then a new general election will follow to produce parliament representatives and form a new democratic government.

He also called on the people to join hands in safeguarding the perpetuation of independence and sovereignty of the state and collectively strive for non-integration of the union and non-disintegration of national solidarity.

On Friday morning, an Independence Day state flag hoisting and saluting ceremony was also held in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw.

The government also conferred many religious titles to hundreds of religious figures, including venerable monks and nuns, as well as medals of commendation to thousands of person who have made excellent performances in their respective sectors.

Myanmar regained independence from the British colonialists on Jan. 4,1948.
