A group of junior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines is actively recruiting soldiers to join a plan to topple the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a senior government official said on Friday.
Interior Secretary of the Philippines Ronaldo Puno made the statement during a speech at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame, Metro Manila.
PNP chief Avelino Razon Jr. confirmed Puno's words, but declined to reveal more details about the plan and the people behind it.
Puno told policemen in his New Year's call to maintain vigilance and continue pursuing the people behind the plot.
The interior secretary, however, did not disclose if the plot is connected to the failed rebellion led by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Army Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim in last November. The two, with some 30 rebellious soldiers, staged a six-hour standoff at a five-star hotel in the country's Makati financial district on Nov. 28 last year.
The police said the failed rebellion at the Manila Peninsula involved four groups and they have not revealed the people who formed the three other groups.
