Bangladeshi caretaker government Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Saturday said the government has taken steps to import one million tons of rice to stabilize the food prices.

The Chief Adviser said contract for the import of 400,000 tons of rice has already been given under which the rice has started reaching the country.

Dr Fakhruddin said he has held a meeting to discuss ways for the quick import of the remaining 600,000 tons of rice.

He said a high-level government delegation would go to India this week to finalize the import of 500,000 tons of rice from the neighboring country. The other 100,000 tons of rice will be imported from Thailand or Vietnam.

Dr Fakhruddin hoped that these steps would stabilize the food prices in the market.

According to local media, rice price in the retail market in Bangladesh sky-rocketed in the last few days due to shortage of supply and illegal hoarding by millers and wholesalers.
