The health of Indonesian former President Soeharto was said to be improving Saturday evening afterit was widely reported earlier in the day he was in a critical condition.
"Pak Harto's condition started to improve after he underwent dialysis treatment. He is now receiving a blood transfusion," local press Sunday quoted Dr. Mardjo Soebandiono at Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta, as saying.
"He has started to communicate," he added, without elaborating.
Dialysis, which involves removing toxins from the blood to helpcontrol blood pressure, is commonly used to treat patients suffering from advanced kidney failure.
Dr. Mardjo said his team managed to pump excess fluid out of Soeharto's body at a rate of 50 cc per hour.
Soeharto, 86, was admitted to Pertamina Hospital on Friday withswollen intestines, a dangerously low heart rate and anemia.
Soeharto was in 2000 prosecuted in a multimillion dollar corruption case, but based on a recommendation from a presidentialteam of doctors, the court declared him too ill to stand trial.
After 32 years in power, the former strongman was forced to step down in 1998 in the face of mass protests but many believed his cronies were still exerting an influence to prevent him from being brought to justice.
