Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith on Monday expressed extreme concern over the violence in Kenya and urged Kenya's political leaders to start negotiations.

"We urge all political leaders in Kenya to take part in the international mediation, which has been suggested and recommended by the African Union," he told local reporters in Perth, Western Australia.

At least 300 people were killed in a violence sparked by disputed elections in Kenya for the past week.

Australia has donated 1 million dollars (87.3 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid through the Red Cross in Kenya and is open to requests for more assistance, he said.

"A further contribution may well be required in the terrible event that circumstances continue to deteriorate," he said.
