An Indonesian court on Tuesday began civil trial against former Indonesian President Soeharto although he is now in critical condition at a hospital.
Indonesian attorney general office has refused to drop the civil case of 86-year-old retired general although his criminal case was already dropped in 2006 for his illness, according to the attorney general Herdarman Supandji.
The former president has been charged for embezzling more than one billion U.S. dollars funds through his foundations during his rules.
Soeharto had allegedly misused the education funds collected from the state-owned banks and did not channel the funds appropriately for scholarship of university students.
Two witnesses, whom received the funds, attended the hearing of Tuesday session at the South Jakarta district court.
Soeharto had ruled Indonesia for 32 years before he was toppled by pro-democracy mass riot on May 21, 1998.
He faced numerous allegation of human rights violation and corruption during his rules, but in May 2006 prosecutors closed a criminal case against him due to his deteriorating health.
