A customs vessel has left Western Australia on her way to monitor Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean, the Australian government announced Wednesday.
The Oceanic Viking sailed from the Stirling naval base south of Perth on Tuesday, carrying 30 customs officers and a federal environment department official, a spokeswoman for Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus told reporters.
The customs ship will spend three weeks gathering video and photographic evidence for a potential international court case against Japanese whaling, the government has announced.
The Japanese whalers plan to kill 935 minke whales and 50 fin whales for research purposes against international criticism. Source:Xinhua
