Five new advisors were sworn in to replenish the half-vacant Council of Advisors of the Bangladesh caretaker government on Wednesday evening.

Bangladesh constitution allows 10 members of advisers and one chief adviser with the rank and status of prime minister for a caretaker government.

The new advisors inducted into the Council of Advisors are former agriculture secretary AMM Shawkat Ali, former Director General of National Security Intelligence (NSI) Maj Gen (retd) Golam Kader, former Attorney-General AF Hassan Ariff, economist DrHossain Zillur Rahman, and Rashed K Chowdhury, executive director of an NGO named Gano Shakkarata Avijan.

The portfolio of the new advisers has not yet been allocated.

This came following four advisers' resignations on Tuesday and one resignation on Dec. 26 last year.

Law and Information Advisor Barrister Mainul Hosein, Energy and Food Advisor Tapan Chowdhury, Health and Family Welfare Advisor Major General (retd) Dr. ASM Matiur Rahman and Industry Advisor Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury stood down Tuesday afternoon.

The four advisers told reporters separately that they tendered their resignations, as the government desired.

Earlier, Education Advisor Dr Ayub Quadri resigned in the wake of theft of two Paris-bound artifacts scandal on Dec. 26 last year.

The resignations came on the eve of completion of one year in office of the 11-member caretaker government headed by Chief Advisor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, former governor of Bangladesh's central bank Bangladesh Bank.

The incumbent caretaker government assumed office on Jan. 12, 2007 under the state of emergency imposed one day before to quell political unrest over the abortive parliamentary elections scheduled on Jan. 22.
