Afghan Defense Ministry on Thursday welcomed Pentagon's decision to send additional troops to the war-torn Afghanistan, a statement released here said.

"The Defense Ministry of Afghanistan appreciates Pentagon's decision to send additional forces and regards it as a sign of continued international community's support, particularly the U.S., to Afghanistan," the statement said.

A U.S. defense department spokesman Wednesday said that the U.S. is considering sending additional 3,000 marines within two months to boost the ongoing U.S.-led war against Taliban and al-Qaida operatives in Afghanistan.

At present, the U.S. military strength in Afghanistan is some 26,000, most of them deployed under the flag of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
