The new date for Nepali Constituent Assembly (CA) election has been fixed on April 10, 2008.

The new date, falling on the 28th of the last month in Nepali calendar, Chaitra of Year 2064, was set at the Cabinet meeting held on Friday afternoon in Nepali capital Kathmandu.

The election of Nepal's Constituent Assembly once was supposed to be held in mid-June, 2007 and later was postponed to Nov. 22, 2007. The dispute among Nepali political parties over issues mainly concerning the electoral system and whether to declare the country a republic before CA election or not caused the postponement of the CA election.

The Constituent Assembly election will elect a body to decide the fate of Nepali monarchy and write a new constitution of the country.

The meeting of the cabinet held Friday afternoon also decided to hold the election in a single phase.

The top leaders of the three major parties - Nepali Congress, CPN-M, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) -Friday morning held a meeting at the official residence of Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala which had reached consensus on the new CA poll date.

Talking to Xinhua, Nepali Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Bhoj Raj Pokharel welcomed the newly announced election date.

"We had asked the government to give us 90 days for preparation to hold the election," he said, adding the Election Commission will have enough time to prepare for the election as the date has been fixed.

CEC Pokharel had voiced strong opposition when the government repeatedly postponed the election, stating that the country thus lost credibility in the international arena by failing to hold the timely election.

He also urged all Nepali political parties and the sides concerned to assist the Election Commission to carry out the preparation for the upcoming election.
