The U.N. Security Council called on Thursday for an early visit to Myanmar by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Advisor Ibrahim Gambari.
In a statement released after a closed-door consultation of situation on Myanmar, council members regretted the slow rate of progress so far towards meeting the objectives set out in another council's statement of Oct. 11, 2007.
They underscored the importance of making further progress, noting that an early visit to Myanmar by Gambari could help facilitate this.
On Oct. 11, the council called for a genuine dialogue between the government of Myanmar and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to achieve an inclusive national reconciliation. They also calls on all sides concerned in Myanmar to work together towards a de-escalation of the situation and a peaceful solution.
