Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday described terrorism as a common enemy of all and stressed for collective war against the menace.

"Terrorists do not recognize border and so, it is for all the Muslims of the world particularly for the people of the region to get united and eradicate the menace from the Islam World," Karzai said on Ashura, a religious day.

In Afghanistan, the day was observed with religious fervor and solemnity amid tight security and so far no violent incident has been reported.

Terrorists by carrying out suicide bombings kill Muslims including school children, women and elders in Afghanistan and Pakistan without discrimination, Karzai said.

"It is our religious obligation to collectively fight against the evil of terrorism," the Afghan president added.

He made this remarks while Taliban militants and al-Qaida loyalists have conducted series of suicide attacks and bombings in both Afghanistan and Pakistan leaving thousands of people including civilians dead over the past couple of years.

Taliban in their latest attacks targeted the only five-star Serena Hotel in Afghan capital Kabul Monday, killing nine persons including six foreigners, while militants attack against Shiite mourners in Peshawar of Pakistan very recently left several people dead.

Karzai in his speech also linked the future of his country to boosting literacy rate and calling on his people to educate their children, saying the only way to alleviate poverty and achieve prosperity is eliminating illiteracy in the country.
