Pakistan will launch a three-day country-wide "Polio Immunization" campaign Tuesday to vaccinate over 32 million children, a cabinet minister said Monday.

Children below the age of five will be administered polio drops during the door-to-door campaign, Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination Dr. Mohammad Amjad said.

About 86,000 teams have been constituted to run the campaign, he told a function in connection with the anti-polio campaign in Islamabad.

The federal and the four provincial governments are making all out efforts for the eradication of polio from Pakistan, he said.

Since the launch of mass vaccination campaign, Amjad said, polio cases have reduced significantly and last year only 31 cases were detected.

He expressed the hope that with the financial assistance of foreign partners, Pakistan would soon achieve the status of a polio-free country.

Amjad emphasized the need for launching a campaign, particularly in the slum and backward areas, to create awareness about the crippling disease and its vaccination.

In Islamabad, the health directorate of the Capital Development Authority has also set up over 100 fixed points besides 39 transit points to ensure polio vaccination to each child.

The federal capital has been divided into 18 zones and about 100 supervisors will monitor the immunization campaign.
