Some 76 percent of Japanese people considered Internet filtering for minors necessary, a government-sponsored survey said Saturday.
According to the Cabinet Office, a total of 76.3 percent of some 3,000 respondents either said it is "necessary" or "rather necessary" to use Internet filtering to prevent minors from accessing dating service or pornography websites.
A mere 7.6 percent respondents either said filtering is "unnecessary" or "rather unnecessary."
The survey on Internet security also found 45.4 percent of the respondents were concerned with safety issues such as possible leaks of personal information or illegal access while they surfed the web.
Over half people said they want the police to enhance monitoring on the Internet to prevent Internet-related crimes, according to the survey, which was conducted in November on people aged 20 or elder.
The Japanese government has been under pressure to fight website-related crimes as a series of such cases involving sexual assault against minors surfaced. In the first half of last year, police made arrests or took other law-enforcement actions in over 900 cases of crimes they believe linked to dating websites, including child prostitution and rapes.
