An official of sub-district government and his son were shot dead in Thailand's southernmost province of Narathiwat Tuesday morning, local police said.
Police said Abdulmasi Sa-ae, 43, a member of Tanyong Limor sub-district in Rangae district of Narathiwat, was killed inside his pickup truck along with his 18-year-old son, local news network The Nation said.
The shooting occurred at 10:10 a.m. (0310 GMT) on Tanyong Limor-Papai village in the sub-district, the report said.
Police said the two were traveling when a group of insurgents on another pickup truck opened fire at them and killed them at the scene.
Also on Tuesday, Thailand's Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung expressed his support for the establishment of a special ruling system for the deep South.
He said all government agencies concerned would have to help him study which should be the best ruling system for the three provinces.
Chalerm also suggested the system could be modeled after other countries.
Thailand's southernmost province of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani were plagued by insurgency during the past four years. Since the violence resumed in early 2004, more than 2,800 people were killed and more than 10,000 were injured. Source: Xinhua
