The head of South Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Tuesday that he has offered to resign due to failure in protecting a symbolic ancient building from arson.
"Taking responsibility for the Sungnyemun fire incident, I submitted a letter of resignation to the president," Yoo Hong-joon, head of the heritage agency, told press.
Sungnyemun, which was built in 1398 and collapsed early Monday after an arsonist set fire on it late Sunday, was a historic landmark of Seoul.
It was the southern gate of the walls that surrounded Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul and was designated the No.1 National Treasure in 1962. Source: Xinhua
