A major area of downtown Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand, has been closed off after the discovery of a suspicious package on Wednesday afternoon, media reports said.

Police have put in place cordons around the area and the Defense Force is en route to the scene.

Mayoral Drive was closed off at the intersections of Cook St. and Wellesley St. after the package was found strapped to a railing at the rear of the Aotea Center about 3:50 p.m. (0250 GMT), police said.

Drivers were being asked to stay away from the area, one of the busiest in Auckland during peak hour.
