Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has canceled a trip to the country's northern city of Baguio scheduled for the coming weekend because of assassination threats, a security official said on Thursday.
The threats came from the Jemaah Islamiyah and Abu Sayyaf terrorist groups, Philippine TV network GMA News reported, citing Romeo Prestoza, head of the Presidential Security Group.
Prestoza said intelligence information from the Philippine National Police warned of threats not only to President Arroyo but also to other government officials.
"It was the PNP (Philippine National Police) that discovered the threat. They are coming out with an assessment of how deep the threat is. It's not just the president, there are other targets," Prestoza told reporters.
The threat could come in events both in the country's capital region of Metro Manila and in the provinces, the official added.
President Arroyo was supposed to attend the homecoming of Philippine Military Academy graduates in the summer capital over the weekend.
The cancellation was first announced Wednesday night, two days before the planned anti-Arroyo demonstrations by militant and opposition organizations in the capital's Makati financial district. Initial reports had said the trip was canceled because of the demonstrations. Source: Xinhua
