Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd arrived in Timor-Leste Friday for a short visit which is aimed at showing support to the neighboring country after the attempted assassination of its President Jose Ramos-Horta this week.
The prime minister will spend the day in Dili to meet with his Timorese counterpart Xanana Gusmao and show support for the government which was plunged into crisis early this week.
He'll be briefed on the security situation by the commander of the UN International Stabilization Force and will also meet International Stabilized Force troops and senior members of the Australian Federal Police. Around 1,000 Australian soldiers and police have been stationed in Timor-Leste to keep peace and stability.
On Thursday, Australian troops backed by helicopters hunted for suspects in Monday's attacks in Dili in which President Ramos-Horta was shot and wounded. Prime Minister Gusmao was also ambushed but escaped unharmed. President Ramos-Horta was flown to Australia for life-saving medical treatment. The president has undergone three operations in a hospital in the Australian city of Darwin.
Rudd said in Canberra on Thursday that Australians wanted to play their part in ensuring security and stability and restated their support for long term economic growth and development in Timor-Leste. Source: Xinhua
