Chief of the European Union election observation mission to Pakistan Michael Gahler Sunday expressed hope that the parliamentary elections on Feb. 18 will take place peacefully.

"I hope that the elections will be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and transparent manner," said Gahler on the eve of the elections.

The private NNI news agency quoted Gahler as saying that the EU mission would make public its preliminary assessment on Feb. 20.

"We will reveal our initial findings in the mission's preliminary statement and not earlier," Gahler said.

A total of 131 EU observers will be deployed in all four provinces of Pakistan and the federal capital on Feb. 18 to observe the polling process.

EU observers have been deployed around Pakistan since Jan. 10 and will stay in the field beyond the election day to observe the post election period, including the consolidation of results.
