An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale occurred west of the Philippine Batan Islands Wednesday.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the earthquake hit 0:59 a.m. Wednesday (1659 Tuesday GMT), with the epicenter initially determined to be 20.3 degrees north latitude and 121.1 degrees east longitude, about 270 kilometers south southeast of Kaohsiung, a major town in the south of the China's Taiwan.
The United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake to be 5.2 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter initially determined to be 95 km west of Basco, the Batan Islands, which lies in the northernmost of the Philippines Islands.
