Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov and Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met here Thursday pledging to strengthen bilateral ties, according to news from Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.

The visit was the first by the Iranian foreign minister, Chudinov said, adding that it would bring new momentum to the development of bilateral ties, to which Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance.

The prime minister said Kyrgyzstan hopes to import Iranian bitumen and vegetable oil in return for exports of cotton, beans and electric bulbs to the Mideast country, Interfax news agency reported.

He also hoped the two countries could strengthen cooperation in the sectors of energy and tourism.

For his part, Mottaki said Iran hopes to invest and participate in mining, energy and transport projects in Kyrgyzstan.

During the meeting, the two also exchanged views on international and regional issues such as the situation in Afghanistan.
