A roadside bomb struck a police van in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing three policemen and wounding two others, an official said.
The explosion took place Sunday afternoon when a convoy of the provincial governor, police and army was returning from Maiwand district to Kandahar city, the provincial capital, Kandahar's governor Asadullah Khalid told Xinhua via phone.
He said the mine was planted by Taliban insurgents to target the governor and personnel of the law enforcing agencies accompanying him.
The Taliban, fighting Afghan government and foreign troops since fall from power in late 2001, has yet to make any comment.
Three consecutive suicide attacks and car bombing rocked Kandahar province, a known birthplace of the Taliban, on Feb. 17-19, killing some 150 people, almost all civilians.
