The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) who emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly in the general elections on Sunday urged the government to convene a session of the new National Assembly and to invite it to form the administration.
The PPP leaders said the government had not yet invited the party to form government despite its victory in the Feb. 18 parliamentary polls. The matter was also discussed during PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's meeting with newly elected lawmakers from Balochistan province here on Sunday.
The formation of new government in Pakistan after parliamentary elections was gaining momentum as the PPP veteran leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim emerged as a consensus and favorite candidate for the slot of premiership.
The new government will likely name its prime minister in early March, according to party officials.
The PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the two parties which emerged as the two largest parties in National Assembly in the general elections, have been weighing their choice for premier after agreeing to form a coalition.
Senior PML-N leader Khwaja Muhammad Asif on Sunday called on Zardari to discuss cooperation between the two parties in forming the new government.
Officials from both parties said the front runner should be Makhdoom Amin Fahim, the widely respected vice president of the slain former premier Benazir Bhutto's PPP.
The two camps, once bitter rivals, have agreed that the PPP would designate the next Prime Minister.
