The U.S. ambassador to Pakistan called on former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday.
Ambassador Anne W. Patterson congratulated Sharif, also leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over the victory of his party in the recently-held general elections, a U.S. embassy statement said.
"Through the electoral process, the Pakistani people have expressed their views, and we respect their choices," Patterson said during her meeting with Sharif.
During her first meeting with Sharif after the elections, Patterson reiterated U.S. President George W. Bush's commitment to democracy in Pakistan. She also informed him about the "U.S. shared interests with Pakistan" and continuing U.S. economic assistance and military cooperation with Pakistan.
The general elections of Pakistan were held on Feb. 18. The election commission of Pakistan has not released the official results of the elections. However, initial unofficial results show that Pakistan People's Party emerged as the largest party in the national assembly (NA) while PML-N secured the second largest number of NA seats in the elections.
"We are ready to work with whatever coalition is formed. It is up to those elected to form a government," Patterson said.
"We wish to continue working together advancing our common agenda of improving the lives of the Pakistani people through development assistance and continuing our joint efforts to improve Pakistan's ability to enhance its own security," she emphasized.
