Vietnam consistently pursues the one-China policy, and opposes Taiwan's organization of a referendum on joining the United Nations, a Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Dung said Wednesday.

"Taiwan is an integral part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all China. Vietnam opposes Taiwan's organization of a referendum on joining the United Nations under the name of Taiwan," Vu Dung answered Xinhua reporters' queries about Vietnam's response to Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's recent announcement on holding the reference on March 22.

The government and people of Vietnam always support China's great cause of the reunification, and welcome efforts to boost the cross-strait relations, helping maintain peace and stability in the region, Dung said.

"Vietnam only maintains and develops economic, popular cultural and non-governmental relations with Taiwan," he stated.
