Some 1,600 people die every year due to air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepali national news agency RSS reported on Wednesday.
The death toll from air pollution has started to rise due to the rising air pollution level in the Kathmandu Valley. Nepali capital Kathmandu and two nearby cities Patan and Bhaktapur are located at the valley. The cause of the serious air pollution is the growing number of vehicles, substandard petroleum products, improperly maintained and repaired vehicles, badly managed and narrow roads and hundreds of brick kilns in that area.
At a forum organized by Nepal Federation of Environment Journalists (NEFEJ) in Kathmandu Wednesday, experts said some success has been made in the reduction of emission of poisonous gases but expressed concern the number of patients suffering from bronchial and respiratory diseases visiting hospitals has increased.
The environmental experts called on the journalists to write about the worsening environmental situation in the valley in orderto raise public awareness on environment conservation.
At the forum, environmentalists Bhusan Tuladhar and Dr. Toran Sharma said more than 350,000 vehicles that ply in the Kathmandu Valley are annually adding nearly 35 to 40 thousand tonnes of poisonous gas in the Valley's atmosphere.
They warned that a big problem will arise in the Valley environment if pollution level increases at its present rate. Source: Xinhua
