The death toll has risen sharply to 39 in the ferry capsizal incident in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, as more dead bodies have been recovered with the salvage of the launch on early Friday.
The MV Sourav ferry sailing from Dhaka Sadarghat Terminal for Munshiganj district, about 30 km southeast of Dhaka, capsized in the Buriganga river on the outskirt of Dhaka on Thursday afternoon after being hit by a sand-laden barge Thursday afternoon.
The ferry carrying about 150 passengers on board was salvged at 5:15 am Friday by salvaging ship "Rustam" after 7 hours frantic efforts.
With the salvage, the rescuers recovered more bodies, pushing the death toll to 39 including 18 women, 12 men and 9 children.
Bangladesh's President Iajuddin Ahmed and chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed of the caretaker government on Thursday in separate statements expressed deep sorrows at the death of the passengers and sympathy for bereaved families.
The government formed a five-member inquiry committee to probe the accident. The committee has been asked to submit its report by seven days and make recommendations on way to prevent such accidents.
Each victim's family will be compensated 20,000 taka (about 286U.S. dollars), officials said. Source: Xinhua
