Two New Zealand police officers from Auckland left for Los Angeles, the United States, on Sunday to bring home a man accused of abandoning his daughter in Melbourne after murdering his wife in Auckland.

Fugitive Xue Naiyin was arrested in Georgia late last week after members of the local Chinese community recognized him from coverage they had seen on the TV show "America's Most Wanted". They befriended him, then chose their moment to pounce on the formidable martial arts expert. They "hog tied" him, called police, and sat on him until police arrived.

Xue is the father of three-year-old Xue Qianxun, who has often been referred to as "Pumpkin", and the husband of Liu An'an. Liu's body was found in the boot of a car outside the couple's home in Auckland last September.

Three days earlier, security cameras had captured images of Xue abandoning his daughter at a Melbourne railway station. He then fled to the United States, while his daughter was returned to Auckland and the care of Child Youth and Family officials. The child was subsequently handed into the care of family members in China.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott said the two officers will be meeting U.S. authorities, and speaking with witnesses to Xue Naiyin's arrest. He said plans are being made to bring Xue back to New Zealand.
