Afghan National Security Forces, backed by the U.S.-led Coalition forces, have killed several Taliban insurgents when foiling an ambush by the outfits in southern Afghan province of Helmand, said a Coalition statement released here on Wednesday.

The combined force was conducting a reconnaissance patrol when a group of insurgents engaged them with small-arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and mortar fire 30 kilometers northeast of Gareshk district in Helmand province on March 2, the statement said.

The combined force fixed the insurgents in their position and used precision munitions to effectively eliminate several insurgents who were trying to reinforce the enemy positions, it said.

Conflicts and Taliban-related insurgency had left more than 6,000 people dead in 2007, while observers predict more militants attack in 2008 in the post-Taliban Afghanistan.
