Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd started a visit to Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Thursday to hold talks with his PNG counterpart Michael Somare in Port Moresby.
The Australian Associated Press reported that Rudd arrived at Port Moresby Thursday morning and was greeted by PNG ministers, Australian diplomatic staff, a military band and dancers in traditional costume.
Rudd will discuss with Somare the climate change initiatives, the Kokoda Track and the viability of a seasonal migrant workers scheme in Australia.
He is also expected to discuss the possibility of putting Australian police back on PNG streets, as part of a revamped Enhanced Cooperation Program (ECP).
Rudd's three-day visit is the first by an Australian prime minister to PNG since former Prime Minister John Howard attended the Pacific Island Forum leaders meeting in October 2005.
On Saturday, he will fly to the Solomon Islands to meet Prime Minister Derek Sikua, before returning to Australia Saturday night. Source: Xinhua
