An earthquake with magnitude of 6.4 jolted North Maluku province in eastern parts of Indonesia on Thursday morning, no initial report of damages or casualties, the meteorology agency said here.
The quake struck at 8:22 a. m. Jakarta time (0122GMT) with epicenter at 216 kilometers northeast Ternate of the province and at 105 kilometers under ocean floor, an official of the agency Anas Fauzi told Xinhua.
The intensity of the quake was not felt, he said.
"The epicenter of the quake is too deep, so the shakes were not felt in land," said Fauzi.
In 2004, over 170,000 people were dead in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and other countries in southeast Asia.
Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet that cause frequent volcanic movements.
