Australian police and immigration officials said Friday they have smashed a multi-million dollar international sex ring, freeing 10 women and arresting five people in six raids across Sydney.
"This is probably the largest alleged syndicate that we have smashed," immigration assistant secretary Lyn O'Connell told reporters.
The operation undertaken on Thursday was one of the largest of its kind conducted by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, and Australian Federal Police (AFP).
The 10 victims are now recovering and have been provided with counseling.
Federal police have so far arrested five people, and three of them would be facing Sydney Local Court on Friday.
The maximum penalty for people trafficking is 15 years in jail while the alleged kingpin faces 25 years under proceeds of crime law if convicted. Source:Xinhua
