Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith on Friday condemned a deadly attack on a Jewish school in Jerusalem, saying it was cowardly violence against innocent civilians.

He said he was "shocked and appalled by the attack against the Mercaz Harav school in Jerusalem last night, in which eight students are reported killed."

"Australia condemns unreservedly such cowardly violence against innocent civilians," he said in a statement.

"Such violence seeks only to undermine the peace process, which offers the only hope for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said.

Eight students were killed and another nine wounded, many seriously, Thursday night when a Palestinian gunman opened fire inside the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in the Kiryat Moshe quarter of Jerusalem.
