Former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid was nominated by the National Awakening Party (PKB) for next year's presidential election, local press said Monday.
Wahid, better known here as Gus Dur, has said he was positive about his prospects in the elections.
"I am optimistic. We have gained support from ulemas in villages. They will encourage their masses to support me to help build a prosperous country," he was quoted by English daily The Jakarta Post as saying.
Gus Dur, who is nearly blind and failed to pass medical test in the 2004 election qualifying, will compete with his successor Megawati Soekarnoputri and incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The presidential term of the 67-year-old was short lived as he was impeached by a parliament session for incompetence in 2001, just two years after taking office.
