Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi on the Barisan Nasional's (BN) election victory and formation of a new government.

In his letter, Lee also reaffirmed Singapore's commitment to working with Abdullah to deepen the good bilateral relationship as well as for regional stability and prosperity, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry on Monday.

Malaysia's ruling coalition BN, or National Front, won the 12thgeneral election held on Saturday, but lost its dominant two-thirds majority in the parliament.

Though the results are surprising, it's not likely to result in political instability and should also not affect bilateral relations with Singapore, said Singapore's Foreign Minister George Yeo.

"What BN has been able to achieve is still a solid majority, so even though there'll be, I'm sure, changes in Malaysia in response to the outcome, I don't think it will affect political stability there and it should not affect bilateral relations," Yeo was quoted by local radio station 938 Live as saying.

"Our bilateral relations are very good and getting better and I see no reason why it should not get better after the elections," he added.

The foreign minister said both sides will continue to cooperate in areas of common interests.
