Malaysian Senate President Abdul Hamid Pawanteh had arrived in Senegal to officially hand over the chairmanship of Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), on behalf of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, to Senegal, Malaysia's national news agency reported on Wednesday.

Malaysia would make the handover at the opening ceremony of the11th OIC Summit to be held on Thursday local time in Dakar, capital of the western African country, it said.

Malaysia took the chairmanship of the 57-member group in October 2003.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry said in a statement unveiled earlier Wednesday that Malaysia views the OIC as an important organization to serve and safeguard the interests of the Muslims globally.

The ministry also said that it would remain active in the OIC.

The Conference of Kings and Heads of State and Government, also known as the Islamic Summit Conference, is the supreme authority of the Organization which meets once every three years to lay down the Organization's policy and elects Chairman of the Organization who holds office until next session.
