A suicide explosion targeting one foreign convoy early Thursday morning near the airport in Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least six civilians and injuring 16 others, said an official.

Munir Mohammad Mangal, the deputy Interior Minister, told Xinhua that a suicide bomber blew himself up near the foreign convoy causing huge casualties and some injured one were in critical situation.

A press staff from the Interior Ministry who identified himself as Najib told Xinhua from the spot that the suicide attack happened around 8:20 a.m. (0350 GMT) on the way from U.S. embassy to the airport and damaged some 10 civilian cars and two U.S. vehicles.

Conflicts and Taliban-related violence claimed around 8,000 lives last year, according to a latest-released UN figure.

Over 200 people have been killed mostly in suicide attacks and roadside bombings this year across the war-torn country, where the anti-government militants have vowed to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks.
