The Secretary General of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Iqbal Haider and vice chairperson Zohra Yusuf in a joint statement strongly condemned the death of a Pakistani in Indian jail, the News Network International news agency reported Thursday.

Khalid Mehmood, a Pakistani national and a resident of Lahore, capital city of the eastern Punjab province, died in Gurgaon jail in the suburb of Delhi on Feb 12, 2008. His body was handed over to his family at the Wagah border on March 10, said the report.

It is regrettable that Khalid Mehmood's death was kept under wraps until the release of a Indian national Kashmir Singh, which was welcomed and appreciated by the people of the two countries.

The beneficial impact of the release of Kashmir Singh suffered a setback by the tragic death in custody of Khalid Mehmood and also negated the spirit of the recent Pak-India agreement on the establishment of a Judicial Committee on Prisoners, said the statement.

The government of India should in all fairness order a judicial inquiry into the murder of Khalid Mehmood and punish the culprits who committed this inhuman act, the statement said.

Kashmir Singh served as a spy for India in Pakistan and sentenced to death on several charges. After spending 35 years in a death cell in Pakistan, Kashmir Singh was released when Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf granted approval to his petition early March.

The death of the Pakistani was unveiled after Kashmir Singh's release.
