"China has changed a lot in 30 years since my first visit in 1978," Bangladesh-China Peoples Friendship Association (BCPFA) President Anwarul Amin said in an interview Friday.

Amin took his first visit to China in 1978 with a delegation from Bangladesh-China Friendship Association (BCFA) as a member and warmly welcomed by the then Chinese leaders.

Remembering his impression on China in late 1970s, Amin said there were few cars running in the streets, there were many bicycles, not many high buildings and shopping malls, only a few five-star hotels, the people all wore Chinese-style uniforms.

"How can I believe in 30 years time, China has developed so fast and become one of the leading economic powers," Amin said.

Amin joined Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) (closed in 1991) in 1980. BCCI opened an office in Beijing in 1982.Amin was appointed as chief representative and general manager of BCCI Beijing office from 1984 to 1990.

Amin said since China started its reform and opening up at the late 1970s, it had already got some reform achievements in 1980s.

"While I was staying in Beijing in 1980s, I saw the infrastructure developed, the third-ring road and fourth-ring road finished, flyovers built one after another, more five-star hotels and shopping malls appeared in the city," Amin said.

"The people's living standard also improved a lot," he added.

Amin said the people in 1980s not wore Chinese-style uniform, they wore more fashionable and modern dresses.

Amin took a lot of pictures while he was in China, reflecting the changes happened to China in different times.

Amin came back to Bangladesh in late 1990 and was elected president of BCPFA in 1992 and remained in this post for the last 16 years.

BCPFA was founded in 1986 and is now the most active civilian organization friendly to China. Since the inception, BCPFA has sent around 50 delegations to China. Amin led BCPFA delegations to China for two or three times.

Amin said he usually recommends former ministers or former government high officials to lead the BCPFA delegations to China for he thinks it is helpful for improving the relations between the two countries.

Every time after one delegation comes back, BCPFA will organize a seminar, asking the members of the delegation to talk about their impression on the visit, and inviting media people to cover.

Amin's last visit to China was in 2005. Amin said he saw many new changes, like more cars in the streets and bicycles became less.

"I could not find many places where I had been in 1980s because the city developed so fast," he said.

Amin said, "The Olympics will be held in Beijing this August, it is a big event for China. I hope Beijing Olympics will be successful."

"I want to visit China at that time, I think I will see a new Beijing," he added.
