Dominican President Leonel Fernandez, presidential candidate of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Sunday chose Vice President Rafael Alburquerque as his running mate for the May elections.
Speaking to local media after a meeting with the PLD's Policy Committee, Fernandez praised Alburquerque's support and hard work on social affairs.
"In the policy committee we agreed that the person who best symbolizes and represents social policy is our current vice president, who will now be my running mate for the 2008-2012 race," he said.
Fernandez said the vice president and he would formally register their candidacy with the electoral authorities Monday.
The PLD's fundamental commitment with the electorate was economic stability, restarting economic growth and confidence-building, he added.
Alburquerque, one of the PLD's founders, was also a vice presidential candidate for the 1978 and 1982 elections when Juan Bosch ran for president. Source:Xinhua
