Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and visiting Peruvian President Alan Garcia held talks Monday on bilateral ties at their first summit talks in nine years.
The two leaders signed a joint statement to promote cooperation on environmental and climate change issues.
Under the document, the two nations will work closely for international negotiations on a framework of effective emissions reduction beyond 2012 and adopt measures such as a clean development mechanism, promotion of clean energy, and improvement of water and sanitation.
Earlier on Monday, Japan agreed to provide 785 million yen in aid to help Peru rebuild five schools and a water tower damaged by an earthquake last August in southern Peru at the meeting of their foreign ministers, media reported, citing foreign ministry officials.
The Japan-Peru relations have soured since Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori fled to Japan in November 2000 to escape a corruption scandal involving alleged bribes to legislators. Fujimori managed to stay in Japan for five years with the supposed support of some Japanese parliamentarians.
