Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Wednesday stayed the execution of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national sentenced to death for alleged involvement in bomb attacks in Pakistan in 1990 till April 30.
Sanjay Mathur, press secretary of Indian High Commission told Xinhua that the government of Pakistan had informed them about the decision.
According to local media reports, Sarabjit, who has been accused of involvement in bomb blasts, is supposed to be hanged on April 1. He was sentenced to death in 1991 for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan that killed 14 people. His family denies he was a spy as claimed by Pakistan and insists he accidentally strayed into the Pakistani territory.
Sarabjit's mercy petition was sent to Musharraf along with that of Indian prisoner Kashmir Singh, who was pardoned and freed after spending 35 years on death row in Pakistani jails. Musharraf rejected the mercy petition of Sarabjit on March 3.
Pakistan's Supreme Court had rejected Sarabjit's plea for clemency in March 2006.
The Indian government on Tuesday appealed to the Pakistani government to treat Sarabjit Singh's case with clemency on humanitarian grounds. Source:Xinhua
