Former U.S. Guantanamo commander Jay Hood has been appointed the new defense representative in Pakistan, Pakistan's local newspaper reported Thursday.
The U.S. army chief of staff has appointed Major General Jay Hood chief of Office of the Defense Representative in Pakistan, daily newspaper The News said.
Hood is now a commanding general of First Army Division East in Maryland's Fort Meade.
Hood is a former commanding general of Guantanamo Bay prison, but his tenure at Guantanamo was marred by a series of scandals and controversies relating to policies on detention and interrogation, especially by alleged desecration of the Islamic holy Quran.
"Major General Hood was nominated by the U.S. Army and approved through the highest levels of the Department of Defense. His assignment to Pakistan is not related to his previous assignment but rather is a reflection of his standing as a senior military officer," The News quoted a spokesperson from U.S. embassy in Islamabad as saying.
"Assigning an officer at this level to this position reflects the continued U.S. goal of cooperation with the Armed Forces of Pakistan," the spokesperson said.
