The Philippine military on Friday morning clashed with a handful of members of the extremist group Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippine province of Sulu, killing at least one rebel, local Tv channel ABS-CBN News said.

Marine commandant Maj. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino said troops have yet to identify the slain Abu Sayyaf member as pursuit operations are still ongoing. Seven magazines of an M16 rife with 170 rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone, and Abu Sayyaf communication documents were also found.

Founded in 1990s, the 370-member Abu Sayyaf is responsible for a series of atrocities inside the Philippines in recent years including a 2004 ferry arson in which more than 100 people were killed. The group is listed by both the U.S. and the Philippine governments as a prominent international terrorist organization.

The Philippine military, with the assistance from the United States, have stepped up the operation to root out Abu Sayyaf, primarily in the group's stronghold of southern Philippine provinces of Sulu and Basilan.
