The issue of reunification, peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula should be settled by the Koreans themselves rather than depending on foreign forces, the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Saturday in a signed article.

If foreign forces are allowed to interfere, the situation will be more complicated, making it harder to expect any solution to the reunification issue, it said.

All the issues arising from the inter-Korean relations including the reunification of the peninsula should only be handled by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea, it added.

The article said the anti-reunification forces at home and abroad were hamstring the efforts to implement the Oct. 4 declaration signed by top DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun last year.

In the declaration, the DPRK and South Korea pledged to work together to establish a permanent peace mechanism to replace the current truce status on the peninsula and achieve common prosperity through expanding economic cooperation.
