Philippine police said on Sunday they would keep vigilance and readiness to maintain public security as the Easter holiday is drawing to a close and millions of Filipinos are on the road back to work.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. told the local media he has ordered all Police Regional Offices to maintain vigilance and readiness to extend police assistance to travelers and tourists for the rest of the holiday, also known as "summer holiday season" here.
Razon issued the order as he congratulated all PNP units for the successful public safety and security operations during the traditional Easter holiday, locally called Holy Week or Lenten.
He said except for some reports of road mishaps and emergencies in some parts of Luzon and Mindanao, the overall situation was generally peaceful in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation which sees the Easter as one of the most important holidays along with Christmas and All Saints Day.
"Police are there to ensure peace and order, and public safety for the holiday travelers and tourists. This made the Holy Week more meaningful and significant," Razon said.
According to PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome, the PNP is implementing a 90-day summer security and public safety operation.
The local summer starts in March and ends in June.
